There will be a primary source research paper, constituting 15% of the final course grade. The primary source will be chosen in consultation with the faculty member. Your research paper must not only summarize pivotal ideas and events but also explore a problem in the historical record and suggest a solution. Of course, your research paper must also explain with what standards and evidence you offer your conclusions. This means that you must exercise your own ethical judgment and objectivity, while also consulting conclusions drawn by other secondary sources.
Your research paper must be a minimum of ten full pages, typed and double-spaced with standard fonts and margins. Your bibliography must include a minimum of one primary source and three secondary sources. Secondary sources relevant to this course will be found in Blackmore Library’s Online Database under the letter “J” for J-STOR, which is a searchable engine for articles from research journals in the humanities.
Footnoting and bibliography must follow The Chicago Manual of Style, traditional in the discipline of history.
