Ancient Greek philosophy

Third Essay: Ancient Greek Philosophy

This essay is due no later than Monday, December 7th at 11:59pm. All of the basic requirements (length, formatting, citations, Turnitin, grading rubric) are the same for this paper as for your previous papers. It should be about 5pp. in length.

Select one of the following topics as the basis for your essay:

Aristotle (highest good): Discuss Aristotle’s conception of the highest good. What does Aristotle mean when he talks about the “highest good”? Why does he think that a highest good exists? Why does he think that happiness—and not something else—is the highest good? How does he ultimately define happiness, and how is it related to moral virtue? Do you think that Aristotle’s account of happiness is adequate? Why or why not? (Be specific: how you would define happiness, and how does your definition compare to Aristotle’s?)

Aristotle (virtue): Discuss Aristotle’s concept of moral virtue and the mean. What is moral virtue, and how is it related to his view of the soul? What does it mean to say that moral virtue is a “state”? How do we become morally virtuous? Why does Aristotle think that moral virtue consists in a mean? How is this related to feelings, pleasures, and pains? In what ways is the mean “relative to us”? (In the course of your answer, you should provide concrete examples of some of the virtues that he mentions.) Aristotle names twelve specific virtues—do you think that his list adequately conveys the core characteristics of a morally good person? Why or why not? (You should consider whether his list omits any important moral qualities; or, alternatively, whether his list includes any qualities that are not necessarily a part of morality.)

Aristotle (applied): Identify one contemporary moral issue and provide an Aristotelian analysis of it. (Some examples of such issues include, but are not limited to: capital punishment; euthanasia; abortion; vegetarianism; torture; racial profiling; environmental degradation; etc.) Your goal here is to discuss how one might approach the morality of your selected issue using the concepts and arguments of Aristotle’s virtue ethics. What would a virtuous person (in Aristotle’s sense) do with regard to this issue? What specific virtues and vices are relevant to this issue? Be open to the possibility that Aristotle’s conclusions in regard to the issue might differ from your own. (Make sure that you begin your essay by defining what this issue is, and why it has arisen.)
