(1) My first semester of college taking an online academic research class seemed convenient. I did not intentionally know what to expect with taking an online only course my first term although, I was very hopeful. There was not a set time during the week to attend class. Most of my coursework was given with spread out and lenient deadlines. I always liked writing and english was my favorite subject in school. This course helped me learn how to manage my time appropriately as well.
(2) The pandemic has affected everything in my life, as of many others. Learning during a pandemic was hard to adjust to because I found myself stuck at home doing most of my college work, sitting in bed or on the couch. Not in a classroom. I struggled to find motivation during this semester due to what’s been going on in the world lately and with that comes unwanted stress. I’m sure many students experienced this feeling at some point this semester, yet we’ve all tried our best to push through. The pandemic has dramatically changed my way of thinking. It’s made me think about my future and if I should even continue getting a degree in education. Not only that, but it’s also changed my ways of communication. Social isolation from quarantine and lockdowns made me realize how fragile some friendships and relationships are, whether it’s by communicating via text, call, or facetime. It’s not the same as a person to person experience.
(3) The positives of this pandemic is the growth I have made since the start of this year. I’ve started working out, eating right, finding new hobbies to keep me busy inside.
The negatives of this pandemic came with having to stay inside our houses in isolation. A lot of opportunities felt taken away from me during this time because the pandemic had seemed to screw that up. For example, having only one in person class this semester. I almost feel as if my first experience wasn’t how it was supposed to be. I really struggled not being in a classroom setting where I normally could find motivation and courage to learn. Working behind a laptop screen is a lot harder than you’d expect it to be, not all people learn the best that way.
(4) A helpful experience I learned long term from this experience is allowing myself to time manage and be successful in completing all of my assignments by the deadlines given. I had a couple bumps in the road, but nothing major that I couldn’t come back from. And although I lacked motivation to keep up with one of my academic research assignments, my professor reassured me and was understanding of the matter.
In the future I will look back on this experience and be proud that I pushed myself and put forth effort into an area that made me “uncomfortable” and forced me to try new things and ways of learning. I want nothing more but to be the best version of myself and this semester determined that.
