American Dream

For this essay you will be arguing your opinion on the American Dream. The basic questions to ask yourself are: is the American Dream real? Is it attainable for everyone? How and why. Example thesis: The American Dream is not attainable for everyone due to racism, unfair educational opportunities, and class status. Or: The American Dream is attainable and possible because everyone is able to have their own individual dream today; through hard work, affordable education, and determination, anyone can achieve their version of the American Dream.

Think of discussing possible topics such as: race, education, class status (lower, middle, upper), economic factors, etc. Use examples in the essay (just not personal; this is a research essay).

Research requirements: Find two outside academic sources from the library. When researching think about statistics and information about the elements of the American Dream: the economy, the average salary in our country, race, etc.

This means you should have a total of at least two sources and at least two quotes from each source (no longer than two lines each); you may also use any other examples from poems, songs, etc. Be sure to include proper in-text citations and a works cited page (MLA format will be reviewed in class).

Argument requirements:

  • Introduction that sets up your topic, controversy around your topic, argument, and your position. BE SURE your thesis clearly states your position. You must have a position, without this you have no argument.
  • A contextual paragraph that gives a bit of background information on what the American Dream is; when it was formed; how it has changed over time, etc.
  • Use clear reasoning and logic to backup your position throughout the essay. Your reasons can be main points. Be sure to use topic sentences and focus your paragraphs. Don’t forget to argue and connect your thoughts together.
  • Research should be used as evidence to back up your position and reasons. Be sure to introduce, cite, and explain all quotes.
  • Include a counter argument that appeals to opposition and provides a rebuttal
  • Conclude your argument and finalize all your thoughts
