The Telephone Services Union (TSU) represents workers in the telephone company, which is owned by government, TSU is against government’s stance which supports CARICOM’s free trade policy and favors, instead, a policy which protects local jobs. TSU advises the government that if it does not repudiate the CARICOM policy, it will call a nation-wide strike. The General Secretary, Smito, of the TSU, is also running for political office on a platform which rejects free trade. When government ignores TSU, Smito calls the workers out on strike, after announcing his intention to do so at a political meeting. TSU’s sister union, the Civil Servants Union (CSU), is also called out on strike, and there is a general strike in the country.

They are physically stopped by the strikers who were picketing the area. As a result, the agreement falls through and Digitel is now suing for breach of contract. However, TSU argues that it knew nothing of the service agreement. TSU also expels all the strike-breakers from membership in the union for lack of ‘brotherly conduct.’ After 2 weeks of strike activity, the Minister now wants to stop the strike which he believes is undermining the essential services of the country. He also wishes to proceed by way of court action for what he believes are various infringements by the union. Discuss.
