What is the Role of the Physical Sciences and the Social Sciences in the Environment
There is a wide array of people who take an interest in studying the Environment and how humans interact with our Earth System. They range from Concerned Citizens & Activists to Academics and Scientists. Even our littlest humans see and comment on our interactions with the Natural World (Think of Movies & Books Like Charlotte’s Web and The Lorax).
The Reality is that We Need All of these if we are to succeed in addressing these issues.
So, What is the difference between these different people and their approaches?
For Concerned Citizens-they look to be educated in ways that help them make the best choices as a consumer in a very complex marketplace.
For Activists-they learn about what needs to be done on an individual level, share what they have learned with others and get involved to make sure public policy aligns with these needs
For Academics (Environmental Studies Majors)-they utilize research and data from both the Social and the Physical Sciences to actively search for ways to move human behavior/activity forward with respect to what the Physical Scientists (Environmental Science Majors) know is happening and how those issues need to be addressed.

Experimental/Theory Driven Science
Observational/Field Based Science
