Select a movie made for children that aims to depict a particular culture (examples below). Your movie does not have to be a Disney movie. If you select a movie with both live action and animated versions, select only one of the two films. Similarly, if you select a movie with sequels, select only one of the films. Sample movies:

2. Conduct research to learn about the film’s cultural accuracy. For example, if you select The Princess and the
Frog, learn more about New Orleans in the 1920’s. What parts of the culture does the film represent
accurately? What is inaccurate, exaggerated, or underplayed? What is missing? Does the film incorporate
harmful stereotypes?
3. Consider the “so what?” In other words, ask yourself, “how important is it for the film to be culturally
accurate?” Does the film need cultural accuracy to do justice to the story it is trying to tell? How should
filmmakers balance cultural accuracy and storytelling? And, what role does the studio’s goals of making a profit
and/or achieving acclaim play?
4. Craft a 6–7 page essay that both discusses the film’s accuracy AND presents your “so what?”
argument.
