For this assignment, you will complete a close reading of petitions by two convicted witches, Mary Easty and John Proctor, who were in jail awaiting their executions.  Though Proctor and Easty found themselves in similar circumstances,

their petitions are quite different in tone, content, and intent.  Your task is to compare and contrast the two petitions

and try to explain why they are different.

Begin with an opening paragraph providing a bit of historical context for the two documents (what are the documents,

who wrote them, and under what circumstances) and ending with a clear thesis statement (arguable answer to the question, why are they different?) that briefly describes the differences and the reasons for them.

Then, in the body of your essay, describe the differences between the two petitions and provide specific evidence to explain them.  You can organize this material in several ways–for, example, a detailed comparison of the two documents

followed by a section explaining why each might have taken the position they did and how it contrasts with the other; or, alternatively, a point by point comparison supported by the analysis of why the author took that particular perspective

on that particular point.  Use the one that makes the most sense to you and allows you to make the strongest presentation to support your thesis. You may want to draw on other documents related to each case either from our cases (John

Proctor) or the Salem Witch Trials Archive (Mary Easty case) or on biographical information for the two (John Proctor

and Mary Eastyclick on “full essay” in each case) to provide supporting evidence and details.  If you do use these or

other sources be sure to provide appropriate citations of your sources!

these are the sources. You have to scroll to find the two different cases then press full essay.
