1.  Lesko discusses four “confident characterizations” or social constructs we have about adolescents. These are four ways we commonly think of and treat teenagers, but Lesko argues these are not necessarily helpful or accurate characterizations. Chose one of the four characterizations, and describe at least one of Lesko’s concerns.

2. Lesko writes that “we have to consider how race and gender are intricately woven into the norms for and into the concept of developmental stage or maturity” and that “development itself [is] raced and classed” (p. 12). What do you think she means? How are what we consider normal “benchmarks” or developmental stages in adolescence and childhood wrapped up with race, class, gender, etc.?
