Organizational Culture and Climate Assessment

Instructions

This assignment will be graded within one week of submission. Instructor feedback is provided as a part of the grading process. Late submissions are not permitted. (NOTE: INFORMATION HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW REFLECT MINOR ASSIGNMENT REVISIONS REGARDING CALCULATING AN OVERALL SCORES.)

Instructions: Use one of the two brief culture and climate scales provided in this assignment to assess your field placement agency’s social context. The first scale, the Organizational Climate Scale (CLIOR) (Peña-Suárez et al., 2013) and the second scale, Trauma-Informed Climate Scale (TICS-10) (Hales et al., 2019), are both valid and reliable instruments for measuring workplace culture / climate. The notable difference is that the CLIOR is more general, and that the TICS-10 is through a trauma-informed lens.

Students will complete the selected scale based on their experiences with the field agency and then request two additional field agency stakeholders to complete the assessment as well. The stakeholders are to be a staff member (e.g., field educator, supervisor, direct-care staff member). Do not collect identifiers from the stakeholders. Please note, if you are at a large organization, you can focus your assessment on an organizational unit as opposed to the entire organization. Using course concepts and the assessment data from the Climate Scales as a guide, address the following prompts:

  • Identify and provide a brief description of the organization / organizational unit, and the culture and climate assessment you used for this assignment.
  • Score the instruments using these scoring instructions:
    • CLIOR:
      • For each individual stakeholder scale response: Sum (add together) the 7 individual items for an overall total and then divide the overall score by 7. The result will be the overall average score between 1 and 5 for each stakeholder.
      • Then, sum (add together) the 2 overall average scores from each staff stakeholder and divide by 2; the result will be an overall average CLIOR scale score from staff stakeholders.
      • Your average individual CLIOR score is a separate score.
    • TICS-10 (adapted):
      • For each individual stakeholder scale response: Sum (add together) the 9 individual items for an overall total and then divide the overall score by 9. The result will be the overall average score between 1 and 5 for each stakeholder.
      • Then, sum (add together) the 2 overall average scores from each staff stakeholder and divide by 2; the result will be an overall average TICS-10 scale score from staff stakeholders.
      • Your individual TICS-10 score is a separate score.
    • SCORE INTERPRETATION FOR BOTH SCALES: Any scores > 3.5 are considered ‘poor’, between 3.5 and 4 ‘moderate’ and between 4 and 5 ‘good’.

Comparing your score to the average staff member scores:

  • Based on the assessment, identify the shared strengths and areas for opportunity across participants in the assessment. (Were the overall average scores similar? Were there any similarities on individual items?)
  • Identify any differences across participants (i.e., you and the stakeholder), and provide a brief rationale as to what you feel might explain these differences. (Were the overall average scores different? Were there any major differences on any individual items?)
  • Based on the assessment data overall scores, what steps might the agency take to address issues / concerns in the agency’s culture and climate? Briefly identify and outline 2-3 action steps the agency might take.
  • If you were to administer the same assessment to all staff in the agency, how might you expect the results to be similar and different to the results you obtained?

Essays should also include a title page, body of text, and references, and be written in APA format. The page length for the assignment will be approximately 5-7 pages.
