APA-style research paper: Research Paper Due Date: Monday, December 14th 2020 by midnight to CANVAS Assignment Submission.

 

Overview:  

I am providing an example (you can copy the format for APA-hints as this is not research methods class but it is important to understand the format details as you will see this format in many fields (social sciences, biological sciences, engineering etc.). I want to ensure that the class successful with the basics of APA-style as you will more than likely use it in College classes this year or in the coming years as you progress in your educational journey.

 

Selection of a Topic: The topic will be your choice! Any Psychological Disorder that is outlined in Chapter 12 or in the DSM-5 (the diagnostic manual that is used to diagnosis particular psychological traits, behaviors, and mental process, also informally known as abnormal psychology). Please select one that you have an interest in learning more about. Anytime you have an interest in the topic you will be able to write more effortlessly as you have an invested interest in the paper, aside from it’s part of class. You can choose something that is very broad, such as anxiety that has many subtopics, such as a phobia, such as individuals who suffer from a fear ice-cream (phobia’s are part of anxiety disorders). In summary, please explore chapter 12 and 13 (therapies) for psychological disorders, developmental disorders, or syndromes.

 

Important: This is a research style paper, not a reflection. Thus, you may NOT use “I” in the paper. Rather, as shown in the example PSY_example paper you will notice words such as “This paper will discuss Anxiety, including symptoms and treatments” as opposed to using the words “I am writing about anxiety”.

 

                                                   

APA-style Research Paper Requirements:

 

  1. A brief APA-style paper that explores a psychological disorder (see rubric for details). Note: The example paper is longer for those who are in honors courses and require a more in-depth discussion of the topic.
  2. Discussion Board: Summary of your Research Findings

DB Due date: Monday December 14th, 2020 by NOON (AZ time).  You must post a short 4-5 sentence of your research findings and respond to another student to receive credit (15 points to post responses to the 5 questions outlined in the discussion board assignment and 5 points to respond to another student with a thoughtful question or comment). All responses are due Thursday December 17th by noon.*

 

*Discussion Board posts to another student must be either a thoughtful question about the topic researched or a comment that may relate to some of the research presented that relates to your own project topic (ie., anxiety and depression are closely related).  

 

 

*FIRM DEADLINES: Deadlines for the Research Paper and Discussion Board Due dates  are FIRM deadlines to ensure I can grade all work and post grades in a timely manner. You may submit work earlier if you desire. Research papers will not be accepted after Monday 12/14/20 and discussion board posts 12/18/20.

 

                                        

 Overview of Final Paper & Presentation (120 points total)

 

Research Paper (100 points)
 You will select and learn more about a psychological disorder as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) outlined in chapter 12 in your textbook, such as: Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, or Schizophrenia.
Goal: You will write brief research report on the psychological disorder (approximately 2-3 pages, not including the one page for the title page and/or reference pages, that will yield a total of 4-5 pages for the research paper- APA style requires separate pages for the Title page and References).
Summary Presentation (20 points)

You will present a brief summary presentation on the discussion board (answer 5 questions I have provided for you in the paper so that you can present your research to the class). You will need a visual aid (e.g., short video clip, photo, image of some sort that displays the disorder of your selection).

 

Summaries must be posted by Monday December 14th, 2020 (15 points of 20 total for the discussion board) and you will need to comment on another students’ discussion board (5 of the total 20 points). Comments may be questions or something interesting you learned from their research. Comments are due by Thursday December 18th, 2020 by noon, AZ time.

 

 

 

PSY 101 Final Paper Project Guidelines

 

The goal of this paper is to describe a psychological disorder within abnormal psychology topic of psychology and discuss related treatments.  To earn full credit, use complete sentences and submit an APA-style document to CANVAS by Monday 12/14/20 at 11:59pm. Do not simply answer questions in a bulleted format in your research paper, as those papers will receive a grade of zero.

Note: You may bullet point the Discussion Board Portion to share your findings and research with the class with the class.

 

In a 5-6 paragraph style paper, please address the following questions. You can use a paragraph to address the below 5 questions. Every person will have varying information as psychological health varies. Oftentimes, you will see nutrition, exercise, and environmental factors are critical in success of one’s psychological health. Other times, pharmaceutical intervention is best and then there are cases where a mixture of all are best to help one’s health, psychologically or physically! Please state what you have learned as you researched the below questions. The goal is to learn about others who experience some of these symptoms, traits, and how to best help one succeed!

 

Please address the following in your research paper: (You can address each question in a paragraph to structure the paper with an easy, natural flow).

 

  1. What is the psychological disorder of interest? (10 points)

 

  1. What are the symptoms of the disorder? (10 points)

 

  1. What are the rates of occurrence in the population? Are there any cultural differences? (20 points)

 

  1. What are current treatment options? What approaches do we take to alleviate symptoms? Do some treatments offer better outcomes than others? (20 points)
